Donate A Pad & Keep A girl in School

What is it about?

In April 2016, Girls Excel launched a new campaign called ‘Donate a pad and keep a girl in school’. This ONGOING campaign kicked off in April with an appeal of support on social media to raise 500 packets of sanitary pads to be donated to girls in rural communities and refugee camps in Cameroon on May 28th which is Menstrual Hygiene Day.

Menstrual Hygiene Day is a global event initiated by WASH United that is commemorated every year on May 28th. It serves as a neutral platform for bringing together individuals, organizations, social businesses and the media to create a united and strong voice for women and girls around the world helping to break the silence around menstrual hygiene management.

For its  second edition, Girls Excel will be celebrating this event with girls in rural communities in two regions in Cameroon under the theme ‘Menstruation matters for every one everywhere’

Why is Girls Excel promoting this event?

The main objective of this event is to raise awareness on the issue of menstrual hygiene management as a taboo topic and a barrier to girl’s education in Cameroon.  The specific objectives include;

  • To create a platform where girls can share their experiences, challenges and perspectives on the challenges of menstrual hygiene management in rural communities
  • To provide information through presentations from WASH and SRH experts in Cameroon on related topics such as menstrual health, importance of girls education, teenage pregnancy etc.
  • To provide 500 packets of sanitary towels to girls in these communities (250 packets per community)
  • To bring different stake holders together (Mayor Limbe III council, Delegate of Women Empowerment and the Family, Divisional Delegate of Social Affairs, traditional and other local authorities in the community) to advocate for favorable menstrual health policy in Cameroon.
